Mental health issues in Queensland are becoming more prevalent, with 1 in 5 people (22.7%) reporting a mental or behavioural condition in 2017-18. This marks an increase from 18.1% in 2014-15, and the rise in anxiety and depression across the state is concerning.
Between 2014-15 and 2017-18, anxiety-related conditions increased from 12.2% to 15.6%, while depression rose from 9.4% to 12.4%. These numbers reflect the increasing number of people struggling with their mental health, and the situation is becoming more serious.
Young people are particularly affected by these rising rates. The percentage of individuals aged 24 or younger experiencing anxiety increased from 10.3% to 14.5% during the same period. This highlights the growing mental health pressures faced by younger generations, including academic pressures, social expectations, and uncertain futures.
The 45-64 age group also saw a rise in mental health struggles, with anxiety-related conditions increasing from 13.7% to 18.1%, and depression rising from 12.6% to 17.0%. These statistics show that mental health challenges aren’t just affecting younger populations, they’re impacting people across all age groups.
There is a gender disparity in anxiety rates. Women are more likely to experience anxiety, with 17.9% of females affected compared to 13.0% of males. While mental health issues affect both genders, these figures highlight the specific challenges women face in managing anxiety.
